This is a translation project on Harness Oil and Gas Big Data with Analytics:Optimize Exploration and Production with Data-Driven Models by Keith.R Holdaway,of which Chapter one is the source text.In Chapter one,the author demonstrates some fundamental concepts,principles and methods of big data analytics,instructing readers to grasp general ideas of how to apply big data analytics to Oil & Gas(O&G)upstream industry to optimize Exploration & Production(E&P)with data-driven models.Besides,the author also highlights construction and management of digital oilfields of the future with big data analytics for the O&G upstream companies to sustain competitive advantage.The translation task takes Newmark’s communicative translation as its theoretical basis.It holds that informative text mainly focuses on the contents and is reader-centered,and the core principle for translating informative text is to make sure the translation conveys the contextual meaning of the original text in a way both content and language can be acceptable and comprehensive to the target readers.As the features of source text fit in with the informative text,communicative translation is thereby adopted.During translation process the translator intends to uncover the hidden logic among sentences and paragraphs with appropriate reorganization of words and sentences,which helps to achieve a high performance of accuracy,coherence and conciseness in the target text.Under the theoretical guidance of communicative translation,the translator studies some microscopic issues of the source text,such as terminology,long and complex sentences and the logic and cohesion devices of the context,on the basis of which relevant translation techniques,solutions to translation problems as well as lessons drawn from the translation practice are thereby proposed.
