This dissertation is a project report on the translation of the excerpts from Part One of The Global Gender Gap Report 2017(hereinafter referred to as the Report).Based on the latest data from some related authorities, the Report elaborates on the progress of gender equality in 144 countries around the world from four thematic dimensions--Economic Participation and Opportunity,Educational Attainment,Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. And the rankings in gender equality listed in the Report serve as the basis for the adjustments to the related policies by some countries. The Report, published by the World Economic Forum is highly authoritative, but it has not got a Chinese translation yet.So the author hopes that this translation will provide Chinese readers, especially female readers, with an opportunity to understand the status quo of gender equality, and thus promote their useful contributions to accelerating the process of gender equality.During translation, the author found that text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss and Peter Newmark was highly suitable for addressing difficulties.Based on this theory, translation methods should vary with text type;reports should be classified into informative text in which textual structure focuses on semantic and syntactic level and less importance is attached to literary skills. Therefore, communication of the content is more important than that of the form in the process of translation. So division and shift are the main translation skills employed by the author. For the translation of reports, what the author has learned from this translation project is as follows.First, semantic communication should be as concise and accurate as possible and reflect the characteristics of the industry to which the report belongs. This is mainly reflected in the professional usage of common nouns, different translation of a same word in different context and the expression of numbers.Second, appropriate structural adjustments through translation skills like division and shift are vital for the successful translation of long and complicated sentences.Reports are formal text with the main purpose of conveying information and may be presented verbally on certain occasions. Therefore, more importance should be attached to semantic coherence and close and explicit logical relationship between clauses.
