A Report On The Translation Of Perspectives On Global Development 2017—International Migration In A Shifting World(Excerpts)

This thesis is a practical translation report.The object of study is the Perspectives on Global development 2017,which was published by the OCED at the end of 2016.The situation of international migration and the problem of wealth shifting under the shifting world were mainly introduced in the book.Since the turn of this century,the number of the international migration has been rising continuously,and the shift of the wealth has become more frequently in the world.This phenomenon not only leads to a more flourishing world,but also causes a plenty of problems.In these years,the European refugee problem has already become one of the most concerned problems in the world.A series of social problems caused by the refugees have made a great pressure to the European governments and the society.Thus,it is especially important for China to know the attitudes to different international problems from different countries and the political and economic organizations in the world.The translation theory chosen in this practical translation report is Nida's Functional Equivalence.For more than thirty years,it has always been one of the most influential western translation theories in China and a hot topic in the translation field.The predecessor of Functional Equivalence is the Dynamic Equivalence which contains four aspects: Vocabulary Equivalence,Syntax Equivalence,Passage Equivalence and Stylistics Equivalence.Its principle is to make sure that the target language readers could get the same information as the source language readers.It pursues the effect of the translation and emphasizes the reader's response to the translation.Compared with the formal equivalence,it pays more attention to the content equivalence.The Functional Equivalence is not a strict verbatim translation but a more objective and equivalent method of translation.From the perspective of genre,the source text should belong to political comments of the practical style.The language style of such type of text is rigorous and formal.The translation of such type of text requires a very high veracity and preciseness,which strive to convey the information of the text accurately.From this perspective,the Functional Equivalence theory is really suitable to translate such type of text.However,the studies on the translation of political comment is very rare at present and the studies on the application of Functional Equivalence to such type of text is even fewer.Thus,there is an important practical significance in this translationpractical report,which combined the Functional Equivalence to the translation of political comment text.The main purposes of this thesis is to translate the English source text Perspectives on Global development 2017 into Chinese with the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence accurately and to explore the proper translation strategies which are suitable to the political comments translation.On the one hand,such a political comment book is chosen as the translation practical content,which is not only helpful to face the international migration and refugee squarely and to explore the research and practice on the political comments translation,but also helpful to enlarge the application of the Functional Equivalence and continue to explore the boundaries of Functional Equivalence theory that could be applied on the other hand.The thesis is divided into six chapters.The background and significance of the translation task are introduced in Chapter one.The main content and feature of the source text are introduced in Chapter two.The preparation work and revision of the translation are introduced in Chapter three.Chapter four is the introduction of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence.The most important chapter is chapter five and the four equivalence of Functional Equivalence theory and corresponding translation strategies to the four equivalence are included in this chapter.Then the last chapter is a conclusion about the revelation,lessons,experience and the unsolved issues of translation.The difficult points on translation of this thesis are how to translate the English political terms into Chinese accurately and how to clarify the logic of long sentences in English so that the word order could be adjusted as the Chinese language habit and then the sentence could be translated properly.In order to solve these problems,there is a series of translation strategies adopted in this thesis,such as literal translation,free translation,conversion,inversion,amplification,omission,division and so on.
