| The annual report published by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority summarizes all aspects of the Great Barrier Reef in the past year.It introduces the actions the Authority took in the management of this marine park and the protection of coral reefs.These policies and strategies made by experienced experts are helpful to the management of domestic marine parks and even other national parks.So the author chose to translate the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Annual Report2017–2018(abbreviated as GBRMPA Annual Report 2017–2018)and write the report based on the translation process.This report is divided into three chapters.The first chapter describes the background and language characteristics of the GBRMPA Annual Report 2017–2018 as well as the significance of the translation task.The second chapter focuses on the whole translation process,including previous relevant studies and Peter Newmark’s text typology,the preparation of translation tools,the process of translating the source text and quality control.The third chapter discusses the difficulties the author encountered during the process of translation and the corresponding translation strategies and methods taken under the guidance of text typology,such as the translation of place names,names of measurement,passive voice sentences and attributive clauses.The application of word class conversion method is also included.According to Newmark’s text typology,texts are divided into expressive texts,informative texts and vocative texts based on theirexpressive,informative or vocative major functions.Newmark states that the informative function demands emphasis on content and subject,and the vocative function aims to persuade the target text reader to react in accordance.The annual report comprises seven parts,and this translation practice mainly focuses on Part 1(an overall introduction of this annual report),Part 2(an overview on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority)and the first program area of Part 3(main performances).This material outlines the major achievements and priorities in the Authority’s work in 2017 – 2018,so the majority of the text is informative text according to Newmark’s text typology theory.In the meantime,this annual report will be presented to the Parliament of Australia as a summary and report of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s work in 2017–2018,with the purpose of proving that the Authority has fulfilled the task of managing and protecting the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and has achieved management goals in the past year.To some extent,the Authority appeals for continuous support from government,communities and industries by publishing this annual report.In this way the annual report tries to make the readers react to the text,so some of the text has the feature of vocative text.After analyzing the text functions of GBRMPA Annual Report 2017–2018,the author thinks that this annual report has the features of informative function and vocative function,of which the informative function is dominant.Newmark’s text typology can be the guiding theory of the translation project.Newmark believes communicative translation is used for informative and vocative texts.The specific translation methods occurred in this report are theconversion of part of speech,the conversion of voice and division.Through these methods the communicative purpose can be fulfilled. |
