| This paper focuses on Chinese-English legal translation with Law in Imperial China as a case study. In dealing with the specific legal terms in ancient China, the translator Derk Bodde adopted the method of subtraction, saving the trouble of specifying the details. His accurate translation allowed western readers to have a better understanding about the original meaning of the article. Most of Derk Bodde’s translations were precise. For example,he explained the term briefly to ensure the accuracy. However, some terms can not be accurately translated for the differences between cultures,so he foreignized the text.Furthemore,he adopted the domestication method to introduce political terms instead of literal translation. However,we also find some mistakes in Derk Bodde’s translations. For instance,he employed omission but failed to express the word correctly.Due to the ignorance of cultural differences,Derk Bodde even produced some mistranslations.Based on relevant translation theory, the purpose of this paper is to study the term and to put forward some suggestions for the improvement of the translation. |
