Based on Relevance Theory(RT) put forward by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, and the study on relevance and translation by Gutt, this thesis takes the English-Chinese translation of daily-life-technology online news(DTON) as the study object. As revealed by former researches, RT has a great explanatory power on translation of English for science and technology. Moreover, the applicability of RT to the translation process of online news has been testified. The translator used Textanalyzer and corpus to analyze source texts as translation preparation. A DTON text includes the headline, lead and body. Narrative and expository writing is used in DTON. There are many professional words in the original DTON, and simple sentences and passive sentences are frequently used.RT regards communication as an ostensive-inferential process, and to find optimal relevance between the communicator and audience is a target. Translation is a double ostensive-inferential process, in which a translator is both the receptor of ST and the communicator of TT. Successful translation is that of optimal relevance between the source and target texts. In order to achieve that, the translator should do her best to maximize the contextual effect, and minimize processing effort of the receptor by making use of interpretive resemblance and communicative clues.Case study is applied to retrospect and summarize the translation process of applying RT. The translator should accomplish her double-role in the process, taking context into full consideration and find optimal relevance. Translation strategies of indirect and direct translation and translation methods of coinage, transliteration, amplification, omission, replacement, analogy, conversion and inversion are used to exemplify contextual effects and minimize processing efforts. This report presents the instructive function of RT in DTON translation from English to Chinese on the lexical and syntactic levels. The translation methods used can help the translator to attain the goal of enhancing contextual effect and minimizing processing effort, which gives instruction to cope with problems in pursuing readability, fidelity and adaptability in DTON translation.
