As the national standardized language test for non-native speakers' abilities of using Chinese,the Chinese Proficiency Test(HSK),has made great contribution to the promotion of Chinese teaching and learning all over the world and it's showing a rising trend.By the end of 2016,there are 723 HSK test centers in 126 countries outside China.At present,there are 29 Confucius Institutes,148 Confucius Classrooms and 32 HSK test centers in Britain.London Confucius Institute(LCI),which was founded in 2005,is the first Confucius Institute in Britain.Since 2013,it's co-operated by Beijing Foreign Studies University(BFSU)and School of Oriental and African Studies,University of London(SOAS).It's the biggest HSK test center in London.By the end of 2016,2192 candidates have taken tests in LCI.This thesis made a review and analysis of current situation of HSK of LCI in last 6 years.It compares and analyzes HSK,HSKK and YCT,which are three major types of Chinese Proficiency Test,from two aspects:the number of candidates and scores,and finds that at the overall pass rate of Chinese proficiency test is high,but there are some problems such as the small number of HSKK candidates and the small market size of YCT exams.On the basis of this analysis and a questionnaire about HSK's promotion of LCI,this thesis discovers some existing problems during the HSK promotion process such as poor payment experience,poor enthusiasm for exams,inadequate cooperation with local schools,and so on.Finally,it proposed some pertinent suggestions,hoping to contribute to the Chinese teaching and HSK promotion of LCI and other Confucius Institutes in UK.This thesis is divided into 5 parts.The 1st chapter is an introduction of researching backgrounds,significance and findings of previous studies as well as delimiting the research ideas,contents and methods of this thesis.The 2nd chapter is a review of the current situation of Chinese Proficiency Test at LCI,including an introduction of HSK/HSKK/YCT and a contrastive analysis of the number and scores of the candidates.The 3rd chapter is an investigation of the promotion of HSK at LCI,including a questionnaire and an interview.Through the survey on the candidates and teachers,this article analyzed the results of the promotion process of LCI.The 4th chapter came up with the revelation of LCI's promotion work,including analyzing the problems existing in the promotion process and providing some pertinent suggestions.The last chapter is the conclusion which contains the author's self-reflection and the shortcomings of this thesis.
