Terminology Management Models In Collaborative Translation

The 2009 theme for International Translation Day,Working Together,invites translators around the world to pay attention to collaborative translation since more complicated and multilingual projects and tighter deadlines emphasize the importance of“working together” in modern translation practice.One of the main management challenges in collaborative translation is to ensure terminology accuracy and consistency,which constitutes an important part of the quality control process in a collaborative translation project.Based on a case analysis of two collaborative translation projects from English into Chinese – UN Chronicle and Practical Photoshop Creative Projects,which the author worked on as a member of the translation team,this thesis,Terminology Management Models in Collaborative Translation – A Case Study on Two English-to-Chinese Translation Projects: UN Chronicle And Practical Photoshop Creative Projects,offers a comparative study of two terminology management solutions: one featuring a terminology management operation conducted by a special terminology team as part of the quality management process,as in the translation project of UN Chronicle,while in the other case,or the translation of Practical Photoshop Creative Projects,terminology management is mostly handled by the translators and editors during the translation and editing process.Through the comparative study,which specifically focuses on analyzing different types of terms,roles involved in terminology management,management workflows and available tools,this thesis summarizes the main features of the two terminology management models,and provides a tentative conclusion on what type of terminology management models are properly applicable depending on types of translation projects.
