A Report On Translating Feng Jicai’s Wulu Ketao

Wulu Ketao,a nonfictional novel,records Feng Jicai’s real life condition in the course of the Cultural Revolution and also reflects the social reality over the decade.On the basis of the translation of the preface and the first chapter of that book,this report consists of four parts.Firstly,it briefly introduces the background and significance of this report.Secondly,it mainly illustrates the translation process,including preparation before translation,process of translation and proofreading of translation.Thirdly,since case analysis is the major part of this report,it introduces all the difficulties the translator confronted during translation,such as culture-loaded and colloquial words,colloquial sentences,idioms,and long difficult sentences consisting of short sentences.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory of Eugene Nida,this part analyzes,with the adoption of various translation skills,the above mentioned difficulties through certain examples and renders solutions accordingly.At the lexical level,the translation of culture-loaded and colloquial words is analyzed.As for the culture-loaded words,based on the context,the translator mainly employs literal translation with notes and adaptation to add the relevant background information or omit irrelevant meaning.As for colloquial words,free translation is adopted to convey the core meaning.At the syntactic level,the translation of colloquial sentences,idioms,and long difficult sentences is introduced.As for colloquial sentences,free translation is adopted to convey the meaning according to the context.As for idioms,literal translation is used to preserve the language features of Chinese and free translation is used to express the meaning.Regarding long difficult sentences consisting of short sentences,reconstruction is adopted accordingly.Finally,it comes to the conclusion,which summarizes the limitations and ways of improvement of this report.This report proves that Nida’s functional equivalence theory,with the adoption of certain translation skills,can be employed as guidance for the translation of Wulu Ketao.The translator,based on this translation practice,believes that both the content and style of literary works should be taken into consideration.Equivalence on form should be reserved provided that meaning equivalence is guaranteed.The style and literary nature should be displayed so as to achieve its literary value.
