Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley who are distinguished writers in America play a predominant role in American contemporary literature.Redemption, written in 2002 and published in 2009,brought many awards to both of them.Redemption depicts some realistic problems resulting from the circumstances under which the economic, scientific, technological development in capitalist society leads to social progress and material prosperity.Redemption reflects various conflicts between the new social concept and traditional values in marriage,as well as different individuals exploring the way towards self-redemption.In Redemption, the individual's inner contradictions and conflicts in the contemporary society are vividly described, especially when encountering setbacks in the marriage and love.Ultimately they get inner redemption and renascence of soul. This thesis analyzes the conflicts of the Christian fiction Redemption through the description of Tim,Kari and Angela's daily life and pitfalls in love and marriage. It also explores the causes of social conflict in view of social change and personal confusion, and exposes the various conflicts in reality, such as conflicts between passion and reason, between lovers and between belief and reality.By exploring the ending of the Christian novel,it can be concluded that protagonists in conflicts gain redemption and a new renaissance eventually.Through analysis of the conflicts of Redemption,it can be reflected that individual's values have been changing in the society when they enjoy a high degree of civilization in this materialistic society, people's viewpoints on marriage have also been transformed. The individual's decline of morality and instability of faith will have an adverse effect on family and society. This thesis warns us that conflict is an unavoidable and inevitable trend of social development;and when experiencing conflicts we should learn to cope with conflicts, adjust our values, keep a moral bottom line and adhere to our own identity to get true redemption in the materialistic world.
