| This is a translation practice report of the Loving Day.It is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Mart Johnson who is a well-known modern American writer.And this work is notable for the humorous,passionate language styles and realistic elements.The novel,published in 2015,has not been available in Chinese.The translator translated its Chapter one to Chapter four about twent’y thousand words.The novel narrates an American living in North Wales,UK was forced to go back to America to inherit his father’s legacy after comic book store was shuttled down and his marriage broke down.While fighting for life,the male hero with various contradicts and difficulties,he accidentally learned that he had a daughter.Finally,it is the daughter who helps the male protagonist rekindle hope and enthusiasm for future.The author focuses on describing something ridiculously absurd but interesting happened between the hero and his daughter.And a narrative novel with extensive application of parallelism makes the language humorous and satirical as well as clear and intensive.Most semi-autobiographical works are narrative,but the rhetorical device in this novel is employed incisively and vividly to better express feelings and highlight the characters.In this way,the novel reads almost exactly like an impassioned speech,which makes the translator delighted and surprised.Therefore,it is how to deal with the parallelism during the actual translation process and make target audiences better comprehend the source text that is the top priority for this practice report.Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the translator gives detailed analysis of the typical examples of parallelism at rhetorical level in the source text.In addition,these translation strategies,namely literal translation and free translation,are adopted with great flexibility according to different contexts so as to maintain the quality of the translation and make target readers appreciate the significance of the rhetorical device. |
