This report, following the line of functional equivalence theory, explores the E-C translation of Donald Trump’s campaign speeches, especially how specific vocabulary, sentence structure, text extract and punctuations are transmitted. It is found that speech draft translating and functional equivalence theory both put emphasis on the reader’s response, formal equivalence, and zero background reading. In terms of the first, functional equivalence theory advocate that a good translation should be able to give target readers, when reading the translated text, the similar feeling as readers of the original text do;Speech draft translation, aimed at arousing target readers’ interest, puts priority to accuracy with which the target readers will respond to the translated text in such a consistent way as the readers of original text do.As far as the second is concerned, functional equivalence theory attaches importance to form equivalence as well as content consistency;Speech draft translation also advocates content equivalence and reciprocity of form. Finally, functional equivalence theory highlights that the translated text should be understandable even without supplying relevant cultural background;speech draft translation calls for translators to handle cultural words embedded in speeches in such an appropriate way as the speeches can be understood clearly. It is expected that this research will better the understanding of functional equivalence theory and shed certain light for later researchers.
