A Project Report On The Translation Of Donald Duk(Chapter1-5)

This is an English-Chinese translation project report.And its source text is the first five chapters excerpted from the English novel Donald Duk,written by Chinese American writer Frank Chin.The translator of this project is entrusted by the director of "A Study of Literary Theory Criticism on Chinese American Bildungsroman",a philosophy and social science planning project.The translated text will be taken as reference assistant to the study of that project.The main figure of this novel is Donald Duk,a 12-year-old Chinese American boy.The source text of this translation project is mainly about his psychological changes from hating his Chinese identity to accepting it.The translation is categorized as literary translation.The report elaborates four main parts,referring to project description,analysis of source text,selection of translation theory,case study as well as the experience summery.And it mainly analyzes four problems,namely how to translate characters’personalized language,figure of speech,culture-loaded expressions and how to reproduce the original style of the novel.Aiming to work out the available approaches to the translation,as well as reproduce the writing style and literary values of the original work,the translator mainly employs domestication and foreignization as the translation strategies,and applies omission,transliteration with notes and some other translation methods.In addition,the translator chooses Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,which emphasizes on target readers’ response,as the theoretical guidance.And it also focuses on both the equivalence of meaning and the equivalence of style,which is of much guiding significance to the literary translation,especially to novel translation.In the end of this report,the translator concludes some experience and limitations in the process of the translation,with the hope that it will offer some suggestions to literary translation,especially novel translation practice.
