English,as a compulsory course, plays an important role in the study of college students.Non-English major students seem to spend much time on English study, but their substantial engagement is problematic according to a few of researchers. The real picture of their English study engagement and the related influencing factors are still unknown at present. In view of this, this paper aims to examine the status quo of students’ English study engagement in depth and find out the relevant influencing factors,to explore the prediction and the function mechanism of these factors on students’ English study engagement. This study intends to provide constructive suggestions for college English education and students’ English study through the discussion of these issues. In order to achieve the above objectives,a self-developed questionnaire was used to explore the status quo of students’ English study engagement and its influencing factors, which was administered to 400 non-English major freshmen and sophomores in China University of Mining and Technology. The collected valid data were analyzed through descriptive statistical analysis,one-way ANOVA,regression analysis and structural equation modeling. The results show that,(1)among three dimensions, students have the highest score on emotional engagement(3.431),then followed by cognitive engagement(2.950),the lowest score on behavior engagement(2.805),both of which are undesirable.(2)One-way analyses of variance indicate that students’ grade, major and English level respectively contributes to a significant difference in students’ English study engagement except gender factor.(3)The regression analysis reveals that,in terms of the degree of correlation, the predictive rank is self-efficacy(0.408),environmental factors(0.308),significant others(0.288),grade(0.250),learning motivation(0.166),English level(0.124)and major(0.044).(4)According to the function mechanism of influencing factors, the behavior engagement is affected by learning motivation(0.69),environment(0.66)and self-efficacy(0.56).The emotional engagement is influenced by environment(1.22)and significant others(0.34).The cognitive engagement is mainly impacted by environment(0.54),significant others(0.53)and learning motivation(0.14).The research findings suggest it is essential for students to increase their own self-efficacy,correct learning motivation and turn to significant others for help.Schools and teachers should strive to create a good English study environment and atmosphere, update their teaching philosophy to facilitate students to become autonomous learner, thus enhancing their cognitive and behavior engagement in English study in particular. |
