A Study On The Influence Of Senior High School Students’ Learning Motivation And Self-efficacy On EFL Online Engagement

This study takes senior high school students’ English learning motivation and self-efficacy as independent variables,and senior high school students’ online learning engagement as dependent variable,with an aim to establish the effect of senior high school students’ English learning motivation and self-efficacy on EFL(English as Foreign Language)online learning engagement of the subjects.This study uses some research methods,such as literature analysis,questionnaire survey and SEM,and makes a survey on 286 senior high school students in a senior high school in Zhangzhou.The research questions of this study are as follows:(1)What is the level of English learning motivation,self-efficacy and online learning engagement of senior high school students?(2)What is the influence of English learning motivation and self-efficacy on online learning engagement?(3)Does self-efficacy have a mediating effect between English learning motivation and online learning engagement?The data analyses of the survey are as follows:(1)The mean score of the subjects’ EFL motivation is 3.3360.The EFL motivation survey consists of five dimensions: external needs(m=3.5764),learning value(m=3.4825),learning situation(m=3.4042),effort level(m=3.1853),and intrinsic interest(3.0315).The mean score of of subjects’ self-efficacy is3.5287,and self efficiency survey consists of three dimensions: course competence(m=3.7063),course adaptability(m=3.4406)and target confidence(m=3.4392).The mean score of subjects’ EFL online learning engagement is 3.3053.The EFL online learning engagement survey consists of three dimensions: behavioral engagement(m=3.4510),cognitive engagement(m=3.2348)and emotional engagement(m=3.2299).(2)The correlation coefficient between English learning motivation and online learning engagement is 0.583(P<0.001);and the correlation coefficient between self-efficacy and online learning engagement is 0.654(P<0.001);and the correlation coefficient between English learning motivation and self-efficacy is 0.629(P<0.001).(3)The total effect of EFL learning motivation on online learning engagement is 0.733(P<0.05),yielding the indirect effect of0.465(P<0.05)and the direct effect of 0.268.The conclusions can be made from the study:(1)The subjects’ English learning motivation,self-efficacy and online learning engagement are in the intermediate and high level;(2)The correlation between subjects’ English learning motivation and online learning engagement is positive and its dimension of intrinsic interest,external needs and learning situation can positively predict EFL online learning engagement level.The correlation between self-efficacy and online learning engagement is positive and its dimension of target confidence and course adaptability can positively predict EFL online learning engagement.There is a positive correlation between English learning motivation and self-efficacy.English learning motivation can affect self-efficacy positively.(3)It can be found in the SEM research that subjects’ self-efficacy has a partial mediating effect between English learning motivation and EFL online learning engagement.Based on the study results,the following suggestions are put forward to enhance subjects’ English learning motivation and self-efficacy so as to improve EFL online learning engagement.In the aspect of enhancing subjects’ English learning motivation,EFL teachers should reduce instruction time and verbal exchanges with students synchronously in online teaching,so that students’ engagement can be improved and their learning motivation can be enhanced at the same time;in the aspect of improving senior high school students’ self-efficacy,teachers should use hybrid teaching model for online teaching,allowing students to use blended learning model i.e.online learning combined with offline learning in EFL online course,which improves students’ self-efficacy in learning practice,and provide a good online teaching and learning environment and platform,so as to make the process of online teaching and learning more smoothly,and students’ online learning engagement will be improved naturally.Hopefully with these measures,students’ English learning motivation,and self-efficacy can be enhanced with a positive influence to improve EFL online learning engagement.
