At present, the study on learning burnout of college students has aroused the attention of both foreign scholars and domestic scholars. Learning burnout, which is caused by academic pressure, lack of learning interest, loss of learning motivation and other psychological factors, etc., refers to a series of negative symptoms in learning, including tiredness, passion losing, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, diminished personal accomplishment and so on. Learning burnout is a rather common phenomenon in the process of learning, and meanwhile it is quite harmful for students. It has a negative impact upon the students; it will make students lose their learning interest and learning motivation, meanwhile these students will be inefficient in leaning.Learning burnout reduces the students’sense of accomplishment, and meanwhile causes serious problems in education. The research of learning burnout has attracted more and more attention in China, and more scholars have begun to focus on this issue. However, the study on college students’learning burnout is a brand new field and it is still in its infancy:its definition is borrowed from that of job burnout and its instruments are also borrowed from the instruments of job burnout. In recent years, the domestic scholars began to focus on the empirical study on learning burnout, but the achievements of the study are not abundant, especially in the research of the independent colleges of China.Based on the facts above, the study reviews the previous studies and the development of the learning burnout research overseas and in China, introduces different theses, different versions of the definition of learning burnout, and major achievements and limitations of the previous researches on learning burnout, and then conducts a survey on the learning burnout in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUSTWB), and at last proposes some effective solutions.English learning burnout has become a serious problem among those non-English majors in the independent colleges, therefore, the researcher conducts a survey on this issue. In the study, the researcher reviews a large number of the previous studies, interviews many students, and prepares two questionnaires based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the questionnaire made by Lian Rong, and the current situation of the students in HUSTWB. The questionnaires are respectively the Questionnaire of English Learning Burnout Status and the Questionnaire of (he Causes of English Learning Burnout, and it is proved later that the questionnaires are of good validity and good reliability. Some students in HUSTWB are invited to participate in the study. Later, the researcher implements the survey, compares and analyzes the data, and adopt the case interviews with the typical situations. Through analyzing the data of the questionnaires, the researcher makes a further understanding of the current situation of English learning burnout in the independent colleges, discusses the effective factors of learning burnout, and explores the strategies of how to relieve and overcome English learning burnout among college students. The study proves that:1) English learning burnout is a common phenomenon among the independent college students now; around 27.7% of the non-English majors in the first and the second grade have the symptoms of English learning burnout --- the situation is not optimistic; 2) gender difference, major difference, rural-urban difference, and English achievement difference are the important variables which affect the status of English learning burnout; 3) Self-efficacy, Learning Motivation, Environment and Learning Attitude, which are ranged in a descending rank, are influential causes which will lead to English learning burnout.
