China's economy has been flourishing in recent years, attracting huge attention at home and abroad. However, the development of the red-hot housing market in China has been facing a slowdown, which especially draws attention from overseas media. These media,by combining their understanding of the development of global housing market with the market in China, reported more profoundly and thoroughly than domestic media did.News in overseas media about China's housing market provides valuable information about the scenario, trend and influence of this market, and at the same time unveils its advantages and disadvantages,as well as strengths and weaknesses. For these reasons,it is significant not only for China but for the whole world to analyze and translate these articles. This project selects 22 articles with a total number of 10,125 words from BBC.com.The author, based on the process of translating these source texts, analyzes the texts from three levels---lexical,syntactic and textual levels, presenting the features of these news on China's housing market. And under the guidance of the text type theory, the author also discusses the translation strategy and principles adopted in the translation of these news.At last, based on a careful analysis, the author elaborates on the findings and gives suggestions for future studies on news translation. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is task description. In this chapter, the author gives a brief introduction to the source text, including the number of words, the source of the news, the content of the news and some information about the author of news reporting. Then, the academic and pragmatic value of this project is also mentioned in this chapter. The second chapter is process description. In this chapter, the translator describes the preparation before translation, translating process and proof reading. The third chapter is text analysis.Features of the source text at lexical, syntactic and textual levels are analyzed in this chapter. At the lexical level, the author finds that the source texts contain a lot of proper nouns, technical terms, abbreviations, neologisms and numbers, which are all related to the property market.Short words are also preferred over long and formal words as news reporting tends to save time and space as well as stay closer to people's daily life.At the syntactic level,as limited spaces are given to accommodate rich information, sentences are usually of great length, and sentence groups are quite complex. At the textual level, the “inverted pyramid”,a typical pattern used in English writing,is identified and described.Meanwhile, the news texts contain a large number of short paragraphs, where coherence is achieved by using a series of cohesive devices.Next, the persuasiveness and readability of the texts are strengthened by using quotations. To sum up,the source text is informative,as its purpose is to provide information to readers. Finally,a brief introduction of the text type theory is given. The fourth chapter is case study.Based on the analysis in the previous chapter, the translator explains the strategy and the principles of translation at three levels. At the lexical level, proper nouns are transferred into terms acceptable to Chinese readers and thus transmitting equal amount of information. To achieve this goal, literal and free translation have been combined.Technical terms are translated into Chinese literally by consulting related documents and Chinese news articles in similar field.Besides, short words, numbers, abbreviations, neologisms and metaphors are all translated in a way appropriate and acceptable to the target readers. At the syntactic level, long sentences are handled with extreme care, and complex sentence groups are translated by employing cohesive devices between sentences so that the meanings of the sentences can be coherent.Rhetorical questions are directly translated into Chinese sentences ending with question marks. When translating the passive sentences, the translator often keeps the passive voice or adjusts the word order according to the specific context. At the textual level, the “inverted pyramid” structure has been maintained to ensure the same sequence of information in the target language. As for the large number of short paragraphs, those with close connections are often combined into coherent sentences in accordance to the text type theory. For the cohesive devices, some of them have been kept while others have been omitted to convey the information as coherently and faithfully in Chinese. Finally, highlighted information is also foregrounded in the target language for the same effect of emphasis by bold-typing and underlining the highlighted parts. As for the highlighted information also serving as hyperlinks, the translation adds some notes as an indicator of this function. The fifth chapter is a conclusion. In this chapter, the translator summarizes the findings and limitations in the process of translation and offers some suggestions for future study in similar texts.
