News is one of the important means to understand and perceive the world aroundus. Owing to the development and wide application of modern multimedia, the speedof information transmission is increasingly rapid. People can keep abreast of the latesthappenings all over the world through various channels. People are exposed to variousinternational news reports, to which English news accounts for a significantcontribution. On such an occasion, the translation of news tends to be particularlyimportant. Usually, a piece of news consists of four parts: title, lead, body and epilogue.Nevertheless, the significant differences between the two language and culture causemany difficulties for the translator to present a good translation. As far as the authorconsidered, the key and the difficult point of news translation focuses on the translationof the headline. News headline is always regarded as the abbreviation of a full reporttext. Different kinds of rhetorical devices are used in it to enhance the attractiveness,which brings a lot of difficulties to the news headline translation. Besides, there areother differences between East and West countries, such as culture differences,ideology differences, so it is important to find an overall and effective theory as theguidance to news headline translation.Comparing the investigation and study of the previous researches,the author findsthat most of the researches concentrate on the arguments between metaphrase andparaphrase. Some researches made expansion, but far from satisfactory. This situationis not fit for the modern society, which has a special need for the development of newsheadlines translation. In this paper, the author presents abundant corpus to prove thefeasibility of using Newmark’s theory to guide news translation practice. With theguidance of his theory of semantic translation, communicative translation and typology,the author makes a comprehensive analysis of the present approaches applied incurrent news headline translation, aiming at finding a more appropriate and reliablemethod.By combining theory and practice together, the author of this paper discusses thesimilarities and differences between Chinese and English news headlines. On this base,the author holds the opinion that a translator should not only transmit the informationof news, but also should try to bring more enjoyment of beauty to the readers. In orderto arouse the reader’s curiosity and interest, we can use the imagination as far aspossible to make necessary changes to the headlines. But see to it that any change should be made in accordance with the rules of target language.In addition, the author also makes a thorough analysis of text types and thecriterion of news headlines translation, and discusses the feasibility of news headlinetranslation from five aspects, which provide a clear clue to the news translation.
