SiO2 fiber reinforced phosphate chrome-alumina composite is one of the outstanding accomplishments of School of Materials Science and Engineering of Harbin Institute of Technology. As one of the leading disciplines of HIT,translating the research achievements to English has practical implications. Before translation, the translator looked up terms concerning materials science and engineering and referred to parallel papers which have been published, apart from which, she also discussed with her supervisor, the author of the selected paper and his supervisor in order to make solid preparation for the translation. The characteristics of papers of materials science and engineering are as follows: numerous terminology, large amount of tables and statistics, and high specialization.Due to the above characteristics, the translator chose to use J.C.Catford's Translation Shifts Theory to guide the Chinese-English translation of the excerpts of “Preparation and Properties of SiO2 Fiber Reinforced Phosphate Chrome-alumina Composites”.In the specific translation cases, the techniques of Chinese-English translation of materials science and engineering papers are summarized from three category shifts of J.C.Catford's translation theory,namely,structure-shifts,class-shifts,and unit-shifts.The techniques used in the translation are: shifting from Topic-Prominent to Subject-Prominent,shifting from No-Subject sentences to passive sentences, shifting from verbs to nouns, shifting from verbs to prepositions, shifting from short sentences to non-finite verb phrases, shifting from multi-verbs simple sentences to complex sentence with many levels. After translating the selected paper, the translator has reached the following conclusion: translation should be a rational practice based on certain translating theory.
