A Report On Interpreting Dialogue: Who Can Protect Our Water Sources

Gile, a distinguished scholar of interpreting study, put forward Effort Model of consecutive interpretation, which explains consecutive interpretation in a simple way. According to Gile, people have a limited capacity to deal with information. An excellent translation cannot be obtained unless their efforts can be allocated into listening, remembering, expressing and other processes appropriately. Otherwise, omission and mistranslation will take place.With a TV talk show, Dialogue: Who Can Protect Our Water Sources as interpreting materials, an in-depth analysis of the issue of omission and mistranslation is made guided by Efforts Model. Through an elaborate and profound case analysis, it is concluded that there are five reasons leading to omission and mistranslation: insufficient short-term memory, unclear listening and understanding, inadequate knowledge reserve, notes error and overload. From the perspective of improving interpreters’ capacity in dealing with various tasks, this report puts forward five corresponding strategies: strengthen memory training to improve short-term memory, enhance listening and understanding ability, grasp the key points in notes-taking to raise the quality of notes, enrich knowledge reserve to increase target language competence, learn how to handle various tasks coordinately. Hopefully other interpretation learners can extract experience and draw some lessons from this report in order to avoid detours and explore an appropriate interpreting approach to improve the quality of consecutive interpretation.
