A Report On The Translation Practice Of The Cambridge Handbook Of Language Policy(Chapter 1)

Language policy is the government’s administrative regulations on the status,development and the use of language.The study of language policy in Chinastarted early but because the short of systematization and not good at summarizing our language policy of the time,the language policy is not mature yet.The results of the study of language policy in China did not timely or comprehensively introduce to foreign researchers.In addition,China didn’t bring and analyze the foreign researches accurately.The language policy developed rapidly in nowadays.Generally speaking,the policy making plays a very important role in the maintenance of national security and stability as well as promotion of national strength.The Cambridge handbook of Language Policy published by Professor Bonnard Spotsky in 2012,which contains his own research.This is also the first monograph on the overall discussion of language policy.The book contains the development,research and practice of language policy in different countries in the past 50 years,and has also discussed the field of language policy comprehensively.In general,this book combs the field of language policy.In addition this book is helpful for students,researchers and linguists to study and teaching linguistics as well as study of politics.The translation practice is based on Functional Equivalence Theory.The author collects and analyzes the related materials and empirically analyzes them.In the course of practice,the author follows the principle of "the relationship between the recipient and the information should be fairly consistent with the relationship between the original recipient and the information” toachieveequivalence in form and meaning.The author usesappropriate translation methods based on the Functional Equivalence Theory in three level: vocabulary,sentence and discourse.At the lexical level,the author adopts the method of amplification,conversion,etc.At the syntactic level,the author usesdivision,recasting,etc.At the discourse level of translation the author pays attention totwo aspects: cohesion and coherence.The practice report consists of 5 parts: the first part is about the origin of the practice,in this part the author introduces the background and significance of the practice;the second part is about the translation task,including the briefly introduction of Bonnard Spotsky and the Cambridge Handbook of Language Policy as well as the practice steps;the third part is the theoretical basis──Functional Equivalence Theory;the fourth part the author summarize and analyze the specific cases of the use of translation methods;the last part is about the summary of the whole practice,contains two aspects: shortcomings and enlightenment.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,the author had selected specific translation methodsand finally solved the difficulty of translation.The translation practice plays a very important role in guiding the translation practice of the author in the future.At the same time,the author hopes to provide valuable information to the researchers who study language policy in China by means of translation.
