A Study Of News Translation From The Perspective Of Frame Theory

In the context of globalization,news translation plays an increasingly important role in linguistic and cultural communications.However,current studies on news translation still leave much to be desired.Firstly,research perspectives are confined to traditional translation theories.Accordingly,the interdisciplinary features of news translation are neglected since it is not only a kind of translation phenomenon but also news product aimed for communication.Secondly,research objects are limited.Most relevant studies simply analyze phrases,sentences or paragraphs extracted from one or several news texts.This kind of research may not stand up to close scrutiny.Taking into account the interdisciplinary features of news translation,this thesis is aimed at studying translated social news texts selected from Cankao Xiaoxi under the guidance of frame theory which is widely applied in media and communication research.According to frame theory,news text has a news frame constructed by journalist.News frame is a well-organized central idea for making se nse and interpreting,proposed by news maker in the process of news production,a result of preservation,emphasis,or omission of information regarding news stories,issues or phenomena.News translation,as a special kind of news text,also has a news frame of its own constructed by news translator.Through various translation methods such as addition,omission or reorganization,the translated news text may present a news frame different from that of the source text.In this study,the author thoroughly examined eight translated C hinese social news texts in Cankao Xiaoxi and their corresponding source English news texts.Based on previous research results,the author proposed a news frame analysis model.Applying the model,the author firstly analyzed ho w the framing devices at different levels in the source text are reproduced in the target text.Secondly,the author carried out a comparative study of news frame between the source text and the target text.Lastly,the author explored the reasons behind the differences between the source and the target news frame.The study shows that framing devices at different levels in the source text underwent omission or adaption when translated into the target text.As a result,news frames in the target text are different from that of the source text.Through a comparison of news frame between the source text and the target text,the author concludes that news fame of the target text wholly or partially weakens or destroys their corresponding source news frames.The main reasons for the disparities of news frame between the source text and the target text are ideology and media property.This thesis provides different research approaches for news translation studies in the future,highlighting the feature of news tra nslation as news product aimed for communication.Meanwhile,the author also attempts to propose that news translator should adopt a holistic approach in the process of news translation.When it comes to news translation,the existence of news frame should not be neglected.Just as journalists coordinate framing devices at different levels to construct a news frame,news translators should also keep in mind the translation purpose and desired effect,and then put to use different translation methods in a ho listic and systematic way.
