Framing Narratives In News Translation

At the background of globalization, news translation plays an important role in cross-culturalcommunication and thus has become focus in translation studies. With the rapid development of Internettechnology and the important function of translation, what happened on one side of the world can betransmitted to the other side immediately by the Internet. This thesis mainly conducts news reportstranslated from the latest Financial Times and in the perspective of framing and narrative theory in order toexamine that news translation is significant to the discussion of the process of news framing and howtranslators participate in constructing the social reality in translation.There are studies on news translation, but very few studies have been conducted from the perspectiveof narrative theory. In2006, world-known translation theorist Mona Baker creatively combines thenarrative theory with translation studies from the cross-disciplinary perspective. Taking Baker’s narrativetheory as theoretical basis, the present study attempts to undertake research on news translation in FTChinese. Moreover, it endeavors to discuss how translators construct social reality by selecting thenarratives of news, and to prove that Baker’s narrative theory is effective in explaining news translation inspecific Chinese context.With respect to the specific strategies, the present study mainly explores three types of narrativestrategies. Firstly, selective appropriation in the text is realized through omission and addition. Secondly,framing by labelling is used by translators to serve their narrative intentions. Thirdly, translators alsoemploy the strategy to reposition of participants. The study summarizes some strategies in news translation,hoping to be of some help for the further in-depth studies in news translation.
