News transediting is an indispensable activity that bridges the gap created by language differences and plays an important role in cross-cultural communication. The Global Times, together with The Reference News are the two newspapers in mainland China which can legally publish news translated from foreign medias. It is an international newspaper under the patronage of People's Daily with its focus on presenting the landscape of China to readers all over the world and providing domestic readers with the image of China in the eyes of foreign medias. It is known to all that news report can influence readers' perception of social reality. Therefore, the importance of transediting is highlighted as it's an effective way in which transeditors can actively participate in the construction of reality. The recent studies on news transediting are conducted from different perspectives. However, most of them focus on techniques which are based on some examples or experiences in news translation.Mona Baker's narrative theory is a creative theory which combines translation and news editing together and takes cross-disciplinary features into account. It sheds light on research approach of news transediting and considers news text as a whole and helps transeditors analyze news events from narrative perspective.Based on narrative theory,The thesis takes 42 pieces of news from the column “Focus on China” in The Global Times in May,2016 and 42 corresponding source texts from foreign media as research subjects, combines quantitative and qualitative studies to analyze the differences of topic selection between them;then the thesis encodes the source texts and transedited texts according to the definition of narrative strategy in journalism;it further probes into the specific framing strategies adopted by transeditors in The Global Times through analysis of narrative frame in original news texts and transedited Chinese news texts;finally, the thesis makes a thorough comparison between original news and transedited news from the perspective of ideology, cultural tradition and typology of narrative in an attempt to answer the following research questions:(1)What are the differences between transedited news in The Global Times and the original English news in terms of news topic and narrative features?(2)How do the transeditors in The Global Times transedit the source texts so as to modify original narrative?(3)Why do transeditors use re-narration in transediting? The present study finds out that foreign medias have different interest in topic selection and tend to report negative news.Besides, authors in foreign medias make fully use of narrative strategies in order to affect readers' understanding of news events,in contrast, transeditors in The Global Times adopt three framing strategies to overthrow the original narrative and to reconstruct social reality.Different ideology, cultural traditions and typology of narrative are the main reasons for transeditors' adoption of re-narration.Lastly,the author provides some suggestions for further researches.
