Since the beginning of the new century,China’s medical and health care industry has achieved a series of fruitful results, the medical and health care system has been perfected, and the health level of the residents has been continuously improved. The introduction of the Health China strategy in the 19 th National Congress has driven medical and health care issues to become the focus of all people’s attention, and at the same time, the sporadic occurrence of conflicts between doctors and patients has also triggered public discussions and debates on the issue of doctor-patient relationship.Against this backdrop, documentary filmmakers have focused their lenses on various groups in the medical field and created a large number of excellent documentaries on medical topics by telling their stories.A total of 26 documentaries from 2016 to 2021 are sufficient to be analysed as samples to explore this framed narrative in medical documentaries. The three types of framed narratives can be categorised as ’rescue’,’trauma’ and ’conflict’,based on the focus and core themes of the narrative.Based on Gamson’s "interpretive parcel" theory, this paper deduces three different types of framing devices and reasoning devices by exploring the obvious or hidden elements in the documentary texts.Among them, the "rescue" type of medical documentary metaphorically presents medical professionals as heroes, craftsmen and consultants,in order to outline the main features of medical professionals, and its narrative appeal is to promote good medical ethics and build a good image of doctors, the medical profession, the government and the country. The "trauma" type of medical documentaries metaphorically portray traumatised subjects as fragile, lonely and reborn people, and their narrative appeal is to convey hope, courage and strength to society,to call on society to give more understanding, support and care to patients,to arouse social resonance and reflection on the concept of life and death, and to promote the replacement of traditional customs and concepts with modern ones. The "conflict" type of medical documentary uses the conflict as a conceptual metaphor to map the problems of unbalanced medical resources, the shortage of medical talents and the indifference of society, reflecting the principle of promoting the development of medical and health care, drawing the attention of society to the problems of doctors and patients, and alerting society to the relevant social problems. The principle aspiration is to promote the development of healthcare,to draw the attention of society to the problems of doctors and patients, and to alert society to related social issues.Different narrative frameworks point to different narrative functions. The "rescue" category of medical documentaries portrays the heroic image of health care workers, and the social functions constructed are mainly to present the realistic working conditions of health care workers and the related situation of the medical industry, and to convey the melodious voice. The social function of the "trauma" documentary is to create the image of the patient as a traumatized experience, and to evoke the audience’s emotional resonance,to transmit life experiences,to dispel and reconstruct the audience’s fear of death memories, and to play a social healing value;the "conflict" documentary The social function of the documentary is more focused on social reflection, including bridging and reconciling the relationship between doctors and patients, exposing and reflecting on the problems of the medical system, and presenting the "tip of the iceberg" of social problems.
