Harvard Classics series covers the most outstanding social sciences and natural sciences of mankind from the beginning of the writing history up to the 19 th Century.It is a great historic work about mankind discovering the world,knowing the world and exploring the world in 50 volumes.The paper,which is completed on the base of a practice report,An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of The Variole Vaccinae,Or Cow-pox(1798),The Three Original Publications on Vaccination against Smallpox in volume 36 of collection of science essays of Harvard Classics,belongs to a translation practice report.According to Skopostheory,every translation action has an established purpose and tries everything possible to realize the purpose.The source text is a professional medical paper with its uniqueness.However,as a public reading material,Harvard Classics faces the broad masses of readers in China.Therefore,it is necessary to choose specific translation methods to realize the translation purpose.This report discussed the guiding role of Skopostheory on the translation of the medical paper through case study in combination with German functionalist Skopostheory.The report introduced the discovery and treatment of cowpox and the invention of cowpox vaccination by the author,Edward Jenner.It discussed the linguistic characteristics of vocabulary and syntax of medical papers,reviewed the background and process of development of Skopostheory,focused on the elaboration of the three principles of Skopostheory: the Skopos Rule,the Coherence Rule and the Fidelity Rule,analyzed the application cases of these principles in translation process,studied the specific strategies of medical paper translation under the guidance of Skopostheory,which were discussed respectively.The paper finally drew a conclusion: the selection of a translation method must depend on the intended purpose of the target language.This report aims at providing some help to medical translation in the future.
