The Japanese Influence In Chen Jinghan’s Translation

At the end of the Qing dynasty,Chinese society faced with severe realities of both internal crisis and external threats.The defeat of the Sinowar made Chinese intellectuals realized the importance of western learning.In addition to learning science,politics and science,they also took literature as a tool for social transformation.Furthermore,the lax controls of speech and the abolishment of Civil Exam encouraged the development of newspapers.And the boom of newspapers industry impelled more people to work as a translator to introduce more literary works to China.As the result,the climax of translations had come.However,China is restricted by the objective conditions and short of qualified translators.Many literary works cannot be translated from the origin country and the original works were hard to get.To solve the problem,intellectuals use another language as an intermediate tool to translate novels.And Chen Jinghan is one of these translators.He studied in Japan and read many western books.At that time,Japan influenced by western learning and chose the path of modernization.Chen Jinghan recognized the function of literary works and translated many books.He translated 76 novels to China which can be seen as a huge success.This paper is based on Cheng Jinghan’s translation works.By analyzing his translation,we want to find the influences from Japan.And we also want to investigate the communication between Chinese and Japan literature in depth.The full text contains three chapters.The first chapter is focused on his life and gives a summary of his translations.We explored the reasons why he worked as a translator and make a list of his works which can be traced back to Japan.And in the second chapters,we examined his works and analyze the influences which come from Japan.We want to know why he choose these novels.In the last chapter,we discussed his translations strategies in three aspects which includes the use of vernacular expressions,first-person perspective and domestication.By analyzing these parts,we want to find the connections between Chen Jinghan and Japan.
