Interpretation Of Chen Jinghan’s “Triple Identity”

As a unique literary carrier, newspapers and periodicals has been playing an important role in the historical development of the Chinese nation, especially the modern China. They were pursued by many of those in power who attempted to occupy them as their positions of public opinion. At different stages of its development, we can always list several appropriate representatives. But this doesn’t mean that other people outside of these are no longer worthy of attention. We should pull them out from the depth of people’s memories, give them due recognition and evaluation, and Chen Jinghan is one of them who is more representative than others.This paper will start from the experience and creation of Chen Jinghan, and classify and locate his creation through the method of close reading, and finally draw the achievement he achieved at there different identity. The first identity is journalist, which is the basic and most well-known identity of Chen Jinghan. This part is based on the main line of time, analyze the achievement he earned during his service in The Continent, Eastern Times, and Shen Bao through his upbringing an creation experience. We will focus on the characteristics of his “timely comment” which presented different look in different historical ages, and analyze the reasons of this phenomenon, including social reasons and personal reasons. The second identity is editor-in-chief. Although Chen Jinghan had served as a chief editorial writer in the Eastern Times and Shen Bao, his only duty was responsible for the comments on the newspaper and periodicals. The New Novel became his first attempt to work as an editor-in-chief. Although the argument that “Chen Jinghan is the editor-in-chief of The New Novel” hasn’t been fully confirmed, it just become one of the main creative force of this paper. The author attempts to demonstrate the rationality and reliability of this argument from different angles, and analyze the cause of its “short-lived”. The last identity is novelist. In this section, the author will start from his translated fiction, detective and chivalrous novels, sum up the main features of his novels and the important role they played in the development of later Chinese fiction on the basis of making an analysis of his representative novels.Chen Jinghan is a journalist who is gradually forgotten by history, and an editor-in-chief who is in urgent need of proof and confirmation, and he is also a novelist who is lack of certainty by most people. But these phenomena are mostly due to people don’t know enough about him. Therefore, this paper is based on the existing achievement that the formers achieved, and according to carefully finishing, thinking and research to write this article. Maybe it can bring the proper evaluation and attention to a great patriotic scholar.
