| With the gradual deepening of globalization and improvement of people’s spiritual and cultural living standard, a large number of foreign audiovisual products, well accepted and welcome by many people, are flooding into the Chinese market. However, due to the language barrier, the audience are eager to watch the products with the native language. Translation is a significant communicative means between two different languages. The audiovisual translation, one of various translation genres, is paid more attention to than before. With the perfect translation, a favor can be done for the audience to have a better understanding and appreciation of the audiovisual products. Moreover, the perfect translation will add more glamor to the TV series or films and enhance the cross-cultural communication. In the circle of the caption translation, its relevant theories are still not in a good shape, which has resulted in many problems and loopholes occurring in the caption translation. Therefore, how to find a better way to enhance the quality of caption translation is of the great significance in the course of translation process.Before the preparation of doing this project, the author has done some research on the Skopos theory (Skopostheorie). This specific theory takes the characteristics and principles of the audiovisual translation into consideration and provides appropriate translation strategies for caption of different styles. During the practice of translating the first season of Fringe, the author has observed the translation rules and strategies guided by the Skopos theory in the course of translating the caption. Making some analysis on the original text, the author finally resort to the most suitable translation strategies and version. The author hopes that this project report is on a tentative way to better research the audiovisual caption translation; and by combining the problems occurring in the TV series and the chosen theoretical support, the project report will improve our knowledge concerning the caption translation as well as the translation level. |
