Su Renshan(1814-1850)is a painter who lived in Shunde County Guangdong Province in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. His works are famous for the'grandness','impletion',and 'disorder'of the inscriptions, writen by uninhibited strokes.Sometimes, the inscriptions look like children's doodling with random arrangement, they actually contain the profound and unique connotation. Thus the inscriptions in Su Renshan's paintings are indispensable photographic materials for the study of the history of figure paintings in 19th century's Guangdong. This thesis is divided into six chapters to discuss the art of Su Renshan's painting inscriptions. The first chapter gives a general outline to the background of the time he lived. The second chapter classifies and sums up the content of the texts of the painting inscriptions. The third chapter analyzes the relationships among the literary form, chirography, signatures and seals. In the fourth chapter, the layout of the painting inscriptions is classification description, including various forms of text, such as picture in stone, approximation of the picture in picture and so on.The origin of the painting inscriptions either in form and or in content is analyzed in the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter makes a thorough analysis of the inner world of the painter for further understanding the psychological motivation of Su Renshan's painting inscriptions.
