| Self-handicapping refers to any action or choice of performance setting that enhances the opportunity to externalize (or excuse) failure and to internalize (reasonably accept credit for)success. Self-handicapping is divided into three types: claimed self-handicapping, behavioral self-handicapping and other-enhancement Self-handicapping is related to factors such as attributional tendencies, self-efficacy, self-esteem, achievement goals, self-affirmation and perfectionism. Self-handicapping can make the individual in the face of failure to avoid the negative evaluation of self-ability from others,and the individual can leave a strong impression to others when they succeed in self-handicapping. Therefore,it is a defensive strategy used frequently in daily life to protect the self-worth. The short-term use of self-handicapping strategy is indeed conducive to the protection of self-worth, but long-term self-handicapping not only make the individual’s uncertain about its ability,and then adopt self-handicapping strategy more frequently, thus damaging the self-worth.And self-handicapping will also give others the impression of hypocrisy, dishonesty, not working hard, and ultimately affect the individual’s interpersonal relationships.Undergraduate students is a group of highly anticipated groups. They are faced with various pressures while enjoying the attention and envy. The situation of stress, such as test scores, honor scrambling, award competitions and career development, makes Undergraduate students use more self-handicapping strategies and ultimately adversely affect their academic and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene the Undergraduate students who have self-handicapping tendency, affected in study and life, and have the desire to ask for help. Based on the relevant influencing factors of self-handicapping and the theory of group counseling,we designed this study developed eight groups of counseling to conduct group counseling for Undergraduate students with high self-handicapping tendency.The study on the intervention has come to the following conclusions:After the end of the group, the general tendency of the group’s self-handicapping,claimed internal attribution self-handicapping, claimed external attribution self-handicapping, behavioral internal attribution self-handicapping, behavioral external attribution self-handicapping, imaginative other-enhancement have obvious intervention effect;actual other-enhancement have some intervention, but which is not obvious.On the whole, self-handicapping group counseling can significantly reduce the self-handicapping tendency of Undergraduate students. the intervention is effective, and the effect can be maintained, this group counseling program is practical,feasible and effective. |
