University is not only the platform for the student to study the specialized knowledge,but also a place for students to grow up gradually. In grown-up, every one will experiencemany successes and failures, had different learnings and lessons, which will cause students toconsider and thence grow up. Success will increase the students confident, which will causehim doing his best in the latter things and succeeding. On the contrary, failure will hurt hisconfidence and self-esteem, doubt his ability, which will produce self-handicapping to avoiddefeat again or being evaluated of disability by others when failure. It has been decades ofyears to study self-handicapping home and abroad. There are two methods to explain themotives of self-handicapping: one is to find excuses to protect himself when failure and theother is maintaining his public image. How to avoid or decrease self-handicapping isbecoming a research focus. From the past research, the factors that influenceself-handicapping include self-esteem, purpose, motives, self-efficacy, surroundings, familyteaching, sex, grades, only child and so on. We haven’t found the papers to specific study therelationship between self-efficacy and self-handicapping. This research aim to study therelationship between self-efficacy and self-handicapping, to better the self-handicapping byimproving self-efficacy. In the past research, the subjects included the students frommiddle-school or university, but now our research focus on students from the medical college.We performed questionnaires and intervention to study the relationship between self-efficacyand self-handicapping.The research included3parts. The first is to investigate the self-efficacy andself-handicapping of students in medical college. The second is to explore the relationshipbetween self-efficacy and self-handicapping. The third is to devise and confirm the grouppsychological counseling programs to decrease effectively self-handicapping of the studentsin medical college, and better the self-handicapping by improving self-efficacy. In the firstand second research,389students from grade1and337students from grade2in the medicalcollege were investigated as cluster sampling by questionnaire. The third research choose72sophomores of low self-efficacy willingly as group psychological counseling subjects, dividing randomly as2group:36students as control group and36ones as experiment group.The experiment group has performed8times of group psychological counselingThe results were listed below:The results of the first research. The self-efficacy of the students in the medical college isobviously related to sex, grade, only-child and sources. The self-handicapping is related tograde, only-child and resoures in the students of the medical college.The results of the second research. The self-efficacy is related negatively with theself-handicapping. The self-efficacy is able to predict the self-handicapping.The results of the third research. Growth psychological group counseling obtained theability to improve the self-efficacy and decrease the self-handicapping of the students inmedical college.
