Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a translation report based on Saved by the Lifeboat,which is a novel for children by the Scottish novelist R.M.Ballantyne.It tells the story that Captain Boyns,together with his son and some sailors,saves the daughter of Mr.Webster,who is a merchant and ship-owner in a shipwreck.However,John Webster returns ingratitude for kindness.The novel is made up of eight chapters.The author selected the first four chapters as the translation material,and based on the translation of it,wrote this report.The author chose Skopos theory as the guiding theory of this practice.Due to the differences between English and Chinese,the author met with many difficulties during the translation process,all of which mainly came from three levels:the lexical level,syntactic level and rhetorical level,like the translation of dialect words and onomatopoetic words,the adjustment of word orders and passive voice,as well as the treatment of personification and simile.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory,the author employed proper translation strategies,such as literal translation,liberal translation,transliteration,amplification and so on to solve these difficult points to achieve the purpose of translation.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is a description of the task,including a brief introduction to the author,some discussions of the type and characteristics of the novel and the significance of the translation task.Chapter Two is a description of the translation process,including preparations for the translation,various difficulties the author meets with during the translation process,and proofreading and modification after the translation.Chapter Three is a brief discussion of Skopos theory,especially its three rules:skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,and the feasibility of applying Skopos theory to the translation of children’s literature.Chapter Four is the case analysis.Typical examples of the translated text were selected to demonstrate how those difficulties at the lexical level,syntactic level and rhetorical level were solved by employing proper translation strategies under the guidance of the Skopos theory.Chapter Five is conclusion,including the reflections on this translation practice and the suggestions for future translation of children’s literature.
