This thesis is a translation report. The original text Love of the World is one of the short stories in The Collected Stories, which is written by a famous Irish writer John McGahern.John McGahern is one of the most famous novelists in Ireland. He is known for his description of the rural life of Ireland in the middle of the twentieth century. It is widely believed that John McGahern displays the modernism of country Ireland to the fullest. This short novel is a tragic story of marriage. It depicts a small fragment of life in Ireland's countryside, which has a profound insights towards human nature, marriage, and rural life at that time. The core issue in this translation report is to discuss the translation of long and complex sentences. This translation report is guided by equivalence theory. On the basis of learning how to analyze and understand long and complex sentences and through the case analysis in this report,it is found that in translating long and complex sentences, translators should comprehend the sentence structure first, then clarify its logic order and finally translate it by the habitual modes of expression of target language. In the process of translating long and complex sentences,it is necessary to employ many translation methods to achieve sentential equivalence, like changing the word order, sequential translation, reversed translation and comprehensive translation. The report consists of four parts. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the author, the main content of this story and its linguistic features. The second chapter introduces the whole process of translation, including pre-translation,while-translation and after-translation.In pre-translation part,it gives a specific account about equivalence theory. In while-translation part,it gives account about the definition and features of long and complex sentences and the methods to analyze and understand long and complex sentences. In after-translation part,it illustrates the process of improving translation. The third chapter discusses the translation process of long and complex sentences. At last, the major findings are summed up in this translation practice.
