Study On The Animal Modeling In Jade Unearthed From Fuhao Tomb In Anyang

Jade carving has almost covered the entire history of sculpture from the Paleolithic era.Late Shang Dynasty jade carving art is another peak after the late China’s Neolithic jade,and the late Shang jade mainly excavated in 1976 from Fuhao tomb in Anyang,Henan is the most famous.A total of 755 pieces of unearthed jade,and the animal modeling jade accounted for nearly one-third of the total,a total of 228 pieces,as many as 26 species.It is rare in history for its large number and well-preserved.These animal-shaped jade carving do have the characteristics of sculpture modeling art regardless of its function or use,showing the superb art skills of jade workers.Animal modeling jade in the tomb of Fuhao roughly divided into decorative,practical and ritual.Through the study of these animal shaped jade,the author draw some thick line understand by himself,and the typical shape characteristics of the jade with superb artistic value was analyzed,such as,lively jade dragon,simple and honest jade elephant and graceful jade phoenix etc.In this paper,the present animal modeling jade was studied from the perspective of sculpture art,which was divided into a three-dimensional sculpture and flat body two categories from the form.The features of the modeling ware distinctive,the composition was concise,the style was dignified,and the very particular carving process of jade,where the knife law was clumsy bold.These animal shaped jade is not only vivid image,but also has obtained great achievements in the decoration processing with smooth and powerful lines and change unpredictably.By comparing with other prehistoric animal jade style,we conclude that the animal shaped jade from the tomb of Fuhao inherited and developed the shape of the jade,jade carving craft,ornamentation and so on,which embodies the constant China culture.There is a new development of the jade carving and even the whole sculpture art.We have a deeper understanding on the important state of jade carving art in the history of sculpture in China through the study of animal modeling jade from the tomb of Fuhao.
