The translation material was selected from the third chapter and the fourth chapter of TRANSLATION AND GENDER Translating in the "Era of Feminism"written by Luise von Flotow. The first version, with 114 pages, was co-published by St.Jerome Publishing and University of Ottawa Press in 1997.The third the fourth chapters added up about 18 thousand English words. The book is an informative academic monograph discussing the practice of feminism in translation, the development of feminism translation and the translation concept of feminism. This translation report is guided by Newmark’s Text Typology theory. The author of the current report adopted semantic translation and communicative translation strategy in analyzing some typical examples in the E-C translation, such as:(1)the translation of a large number of French people’s names;(2)long sentences and complex sentence structures in the original text;(3)the translation of English Poems. And the author brought out corresponding solving strategies:(1)In the translation of French people’s names, the translator referred to the NAMES OF THE WORLD’S NAMES(China Translation and Publishing Corporation,1993)at first, then the translator would translate other names that can not be found in dictionaries with four principals such as in accordance with occupational standards.(2)For the long sentences, the translator would split them into a number of small clauses, translating nouns in the sentence into verbs,or adding a new verb in order to make translate those sentences with Chinese language habits.(3)In poetry translation, the translator tried to unify the rhymes with semantic translation method recommended by Newmark, and slightly applied communicative translation method to make readers correctly understand the meaning and emotion of poem. The purposes of this thesis lie in,firstly, providing a reference to a more systematic, detailed and accurate understanding of feminism and its translation theory, and promoting academic exchanges and information dissemination at home and abroad. The author also called on the society to attach importance to women and improve women’s social status;secondly, learning some relevant terms of feminism by translating chapters in the book, and understanding the style and choice of words of academic texts;applying Newmark’s Text-Typology in translation practice and accumulating experience for practice in the future.
