A Reflective Research Report On The C-E Translation Of Pulse

This thesis is a research report on the short story Pulse.Pulse was written by Qi Yuan,and was published in the February issue of October in 2016.Qi Yuan is a rising star of novel field,representing successful writers born in 1980 s.All the source of her works is based on her personal experiences and literature memories.She exposes that ugly and vulgar things could not only be done by the jewelry buyers peeping pretty fingers of salesclerk—but also done by sanctimonious intellectuals who speak high-sounding words while doing dirty things surreptitiously.Pulse abounds with the serial verb construction,four-character words,Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)terms(including Classical Chinese)and lexical gap.To convey the exact meaning of original text to the target readers,the author translates Pulse by using different words,phrases,sentence patterns in different phases to show the subtle changes of the relationship between the hero and heroine.Idioms and four-character words present another challenge,therefore the author makes full use of printed dictionaries and various online services,and then choose corresponding English words from English dictionaries.Various translation skills,such as addition,omission,division and combination are also applied to resolve the translation difficulties.The research report is composed of five parts.First of all,the introductory chapter outlines the features of the source text and the following chapter reviews the translation process.Then,the author analyzes the problems encountered and offers solutions proven effective with examples during the translation progress.Finally,the author comes to valid conclusions of the translation practice.Though the translation text was completed after being modified and polished several times,inevitably,it still has deficiencies.With all the above-mentioned endeavors,the author hopes to improve translation ability from the translation research and provide some enlightenment and assistance to other translators and translation amateurs.
