| As a distinctive form of construction in modern Chinese grammar system,serial verb construction(SVC)has attracted much attention and been one of the hottest and most difficult problems in the academic for a long time.The study of SVC has been more than half a century,and the precious scholars have also made outstanding contributions to its nature,features and so on,however,they haven’t come to an agreement about its name,scope,definition as well as its classification;meanwhile,the voice in abolishing serial verb construction sounds continuous and the studies of Chinese SVC lack theoretical identity.Therefore,it is of great significance to define SVC and to find out the status it has in the modern Chinese grammar system.Based on the achievement of the precious studies,this thesis,taking advantage of the Generative Grammar theory,and combining synchronic analysis with diachronic analysis,description with explanation,aims to study the features and the generation of Chinese SVC;besides,the thesis has also compared the Chinese SVC with English SVC tentatively,trying to find out their similarities and differences.This thesis firstly scans the overall situation and disputed points of SVC in detail;then,redefines the term ‘serial verb construction’ based on the achievement of the precious studies and analyzes the composing of VP1 and VP2;after that,the thesis classifies SVC and distinguishes it with some other similar constructions;what’s more,this thesis also explores the following syntactic features of SVC: single predicate,word order,and argument sharing,and discusses the deep structures of the construction as well;further,the thesis attempts to use the phrase derivation theory and VP-shell theory to analyze the derivation process of SVC and tries to build the generative model,the relative explanations will also be given during the derivation process;at last,the thesis makes a comparison between Chinese SVC and English SVC,finding that they have some common points in most cases. |
