A Report On The Translation Of Scottish Myths And Legends (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Semantic And Communicative Theories

This is an E-C translation report. The source text of the translation practice is Scottish Myths and Legends written by a Scottish author Rosemary Gray. It analyzes the difficulties encountered during the translation process under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theories and explores how to do a better job in literature translation.This report covers five parts. Part one is introduction to the translation task,including introduction to the translation purpose,the original text and the significance of the task. The second part is about the process- of translation, presenting the preparation before translation,the process of translation and proofreading after translation. The third part is translation theory, in which semantic translation and communicative translation theories are explained in details. Part Four is case analysis under the guidance of the theories; the author of the thesis analyzes the translation in aspects of lexical translation, syntactic translation and the translation of discourse.The last part is conclusion, reflecting the gains and problems from the translation practice. Through the translation practice and report of Scottish Myths and Legends,the translator probes into proper translation strategies according to semantic translation and communicative translation theories for literature translation so as to enhance her own translation ability, improve her translation level, provide some useful references for other translators and help readers appreciate Scottish literature and culture better.
