A Report On E-C Translation Of North Myths:Viking Legends Of Heroes And Gods (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

With the quick development of globalization,the cultural exchange among countries is growing day by day.As an important part of foreign literature,foreign mythology is appreciated by Chinese readers.The research of mythological literature translation has profound significance in intercultural communication,target language reader and the combination of theory and practice of literary translation.Therefore,how to translate it into Chinese has become an urgent problem.The source text of this translation task is selected from Norse Myths: Viking Legends of Heroes and Gods.This book is informative and well-structured,thus could be regarded as a perfect choice to mythology literature lovers.By analyzing the source text,the translator finds it is a typical narration.Because of the differences in linguistic forms and expression habits between Chinese and English,there are some difficulties in this translation practices.Firstly,how to deliver information faithfully.Secondly,how to break the restriction of the source language and make the translation easier to be accepted by target language readers.Guided by the Skopos Theory,the translator focused on target readers’ experience and used various translation strategies to deliver the information of source text in order to provide a good reading experience to the readers.This report is composed of four chapters.Chapter One is the description of the translation task,including source of the translation task and description of the source text.Chapter Two describes the translation process,including preparation before translation,difficulties encountered while translation and proofreading after translation.Chapter three is cases analysis.With the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator demonstrated what strategies are used to solve problems met during the translation process,which was based on the demands of skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.Chapter four summaries major limitation and enlightenment of this translation practice.Through this translation practice,the translator concluded that various translation strategies should be adopted to make the translation faithful to the source text,and the expression should be smooth,understandable and conforms with the expression habits of the target language.In short,this practice not only helps the translator improve her translation ability,but also provides references for mythological literature translation.
