Su Dongpo was a giant star in Chinese literary world. He was also one of the traditional literati with whom Chinese people feel most familiar and close. Since the Song Dynasty, the stories and legends of Dongpo had come forth endlessly and enduringly with time. The stories of him being relegated to Huangzhou are rich and varied, which reflects the profound cultural memory in the hearts of the people. Thus the cause and the laws behind the legend is very well worth exploring.The generation of the legends of Dongpo in Huangzhou has a complex context.Huangzhou district has the tradition and ethos of respecting Confucianism, which provided a good soil for the growth of folklores of Dongpo. In history, Su Dongpo came to Huangzhou and seeked joy amidst hardship, enjoyed himself in landscape and gardens and had fun with the citizens. His optimistic spirit made him popular among the people.Su Shi had gain very high public awareness in the community during his lifetime,thus novels and notes in Song dynasty recorded a lot of Dongpo's anecdotes,which greatly promoted the record and spread for the legends of Dongpo.The morphology of the legends of Dongpo in Huangzhou can be categorized into text form, opera form, verbal morphology and objective image form. The oral narrative is the main form of inheritance. Different forms of works have their own specific contents and themes respectively. This paper refers to the plots and contents in the legends of Huangzhou Dongpo, extracting the five aspects of the personalities of Dongpo, which are:naming and appraising of people and objects, relationship with friends, good governance and benefiting the people, high academic performance and charming personality, so as to draw the basic style outline of legends. The spreads forms of the legends have a close connection with the type of the legends.Huangzhou Dongpo legends are multidimensional and complex. They have great tension amongst the cultural elites, lower literati, citizen class and grassroots. This paper analyzes the characteristics of the inheritance of each type according to the characters,plot and theme of the legends and discusses the driving power of inheritance in each cultural circle.Dongpo Huangzhou legends as local legends, is actually the local history built up in their own way, providing necessary historical memories in real life for people, reflecting the collective memory and identity for the people in Huangzhou. In contemporary times,as an important historical and cultural wealth, Dongpo legends are important resources to promote the cultural industry in Huangzhou, which is one of the realistic driving forces of the contemporary development of Dongpo Folklore.This paper is committed to the systematic combing for the legends of Dongpo in Huanghou, by using the legends and folk literature narrative theory and cultural narrative theory,supplementing with field investigation.
