There are a variety of translation theories since the birth of translation, and these theories make an important contribution in guiding the translation and promoting the development of translation theory. The Skopostheorie proposed by Reiss,Vermeer and Nord suggests that any kind of translation has a purpose that determines the translation strategies and techniques used by the translators. This report analyzes the guiding effect of Skopostheorie on the translation of popular science text. Some chapters of Anna Botsford Comstock's Handbook of nature study were chosen as the research object in this report, and it aimed to study the guiding function of the principles of Skopostheorie on the translation of this book and popular science text.Skopostheorie is a new translation theory that originated in Germany in the 1970 s,and has been relatively mature after several generations of scholars' research and development.Handbook of nature study is a popular science book, and its main purpose is to convey information, but the book is also relatively literary.According to the Skopostheorie, the translator choose appropriate translation methods to finish the translation project successfully.Through the application of Skopostheorie, the author analyzed and studied the translation project from four aspects of skopos rule, coherence rule, fidelity rule and loyalty rule and gave a detailed case analysis. It is concluded that the skopos rule, coherence rule, fidelity rule and loyalty rule of Skopostheorie can guide the translation of popular science text, which not only can ensure the accuracy in conveying information of the original text, but also ensure the literariness of the text. The author hopes to provide some useful experience for similar text translation.
