On TV Simultaneous Interpreting Quality Standards Under The Theory Of Uses And Gratification

Based on the Use and Gratification Theory,the paper choose the perspective of the expectations and satisfaction of the TV audience to find their definitions on quality standards of TV simultaneous interpreting and the reasons of their satisfaction.At last,the paper gives some suggestions on TV simultaneous interpreting.The paper first introduces the definition,features and challenges of TV simultaneous interpreting.Then,the paper introduces the Use and Gratification Theory.The author identifies standards on TV simultaneous interpreting through the feedbacks of the TV audience to improve the quality of TV simultaneous interpreting.The author conducted a survey among 40 TV audience that were divided into two groups—Group One with poor English and Group Two with good English.According to the previous research,the author adopted eight standards on TV simultaneous interpreting.First,the audience was required to rate the importance of these standards.Then,they were asked to watch 4 videos on TV simultaneous interpreting of Trump's inaugural speech.When they finished watching,they graded the performance of these TV interpreting.The research shows that the two groups valued the "completeness of interpretation" most.Both of them had a high expectation on the interpreting quality.They expected that interpreters could have a good performance in "logical cohesion of utterance " and "correct grammar usage".Although the two groups valued the "pleasant voices" lest,their scores on it differed significantly.Through scores on the performances of four TV stations,when interpreters interpreted some common knowledge,the group with poor English can also have a good judgment on the "completeness of interpretation";if the interpreter pauses too longtime,audience will doubt interpreters' abilities;audience likes the interpreter with a pleasant voice.According to the results of the research,the author gives suggestions on improving the quality of TV simultaneous interpreting.First,interpreter should be fully prepared to ensure all common sense knowledge could be interpreted correctly.Second,interpreter should train their voices.Third,TV station should provide a good working environment for interpreter and help interpreter train their voices.
