Simultaneous Interpreting is an important vehicle of interpreting,in which interpreters translate the source language into target language synchronously and uninterruptedly as the speaker releases the message.The simulating activity of simultaneous interpreting aims to create a close-to-real environment for potential interpreters to improve their skills and evaluate their interpreting performance.It not only renders a way for MTI students to self-evaluate on their learning,but also provides an effective pedagogical method for interpreting training.Professor Li Yu,a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,works in Jilin Agricultural University.A lecture delivered by him is chosen as the material for this simulated simultaneous interpreting task.In his lecture Entering a Colorful Fungi World,Professor Li made an in-depth analysis on the concept of Fungi,classification system and evolution of Fungi,and the relationship between Fungi and human beings.This task is video-recorded as on-site material.Then the lecturer's speech and the author's interpreting were transcribed into text.Specific analysis of the author's interpretation performance is made,including the interpreting quality,psychological state,backup plans for problems,etc.Through ways of retrospection and self-evaluation,the author analyzes the problems which frequently occur,and categorizes them into four types: misinterpretation,information loss,improper pauses,and incomplete sentences.A thorough analysis is conducted on three major types of the mistakes that are frequently made,and the author selects typical examples to figure out the shortcomings in interpretation for further study.Through the simulating practice,the author obtains some benefits and enlightenment from simultaneous interpreting.Hopefully,this paper can be of some help to students who are interested in interpreting.
