This report discusses about the challenges and questions that commonly occur in English-Chinese translation using the first three chapters in British scholar Jeremy Harmer's book How to Teach English as the translated text;in particular, analyses about the techniques of the sequential translation, reverse translation, combination translation and split translation in the application of long and complex sentences;how to translate the implied meanings behind lexical items and syntactic structures in long and complex sentences;and how to deal with passive and active voices,or assertive sentence and negative sentences in the process. The selected text is a beginner reader and teaching-guiding book written for new teachers and for those who want to pass the teaching certificate test and the English teachers who engaged in adult education. The major challenges in this translation task come from the translation of long and complex sentences. The translation problems focus on conversion and reconstruction of sentence groups, lexical meaning and sentence structure. This report begins with an introduction of the background, the technical roadmap and the literature review, following which it analyzes the strategies and tactics used in English long and complex sentences translation, with aspects including sentence groups, lexical and structural meanings and sentence patterns. With detailed examples,it discusses about the application of techniques such as the sequential translation, reverse translation, combination translation and split translation at the level of sentence groups;how to deal with the implied meanings behind lexical items and syntactic structures;and the sentence pattern transformation between passive voices and active voices,as well as that between assertive sentences and negative sentences.Case study shows that it is effective and valuable to use the selected strategies in English-Chinese long translation practices involve long sentences.
