Shuihu Zhuan, one of the four famous great Chinese classic novels, has a high status in Chinese culture;Taoism is the only indigenous religion in China of the five major religions, which holds dominant position with Buddhism,Confucianism in China's traditional culture. In Shuihu Zhuan Chinese Taoism is throughout the whole book.Shuihu Zhuan has been translated into many languages,The Taoist thought contained in the book has aroused the interest of many academic research scholars and experts in Asia, and they have achieved a number of fruitful research results. However,in English speaking countries, few people study the transmission of the Taoist thought which is inherent in the book.An important reason is that the English translation is not accurate, not expressive, and even at opposite poles with the original meaning of the statement specious. So does Sidney Shapiro's translation of Taoist terms in Shuihu Zhuan.Existing research which associate with the thesis show that in Sidney Shapiro's English version of Shuihu Zhuan, the translations of Taoist terms rarely achieve the cultural equivalence, pragmatic equivalence and semantic equivalence, which play little role in intercultural communication in English-speaking countries.Today, with the trend of carying forward Chinese traditional culture, how to make the Taoist culture have the effect of intercultural communication with regarding translation as a carrier is important, therefore the research of the thesis is necessary and significant. Therefore, the thesis is guided by communication theory, regarding Sidney Shapiro's translation of Outlaws of the Marsh as a case with case analysis method and comparative method to study the translation of Taoist terms in Sidney Shapiro's Outlaws of the Marsh, which focuses on English-Chinese transformation analysis of Taoist appellation,Taoist magic arts,Taoist facilities, and Taoist ideology terms. It tries to find out the characteristics and laws of the transformation,on the basis of which, four targeted translation methods are put forward.
