Against the backdrop of globalization,cultural exchanges are becoming,increasingly frequent among countries and regions.The traditional Chinese culture is rich,extensive and profound,which runs a long course from a remote source and strikes a line for itself among cultures around the whole world.It is increasingly important for the enhancement of our cultural soft power and advancement of world culture to fully implement the strategy of "Going Out" put forward by the government.Both Chinese traditional philosophy and ethical connotation are integrated in the tea culture,which has achieved a special position in the traditional Chinese culture.The Classic of Tea and The Sequel to The Classic of Tea have been the rarities in the field of tea culture both in China and the whole world.What's more,translation and research on the two works will undoubtedly contribute to the spreading of tea culture.The theory of communicative translation and semantic translation,first propounded by the British translator Peter Newmark.Semantic translation makes a struggle to arrive at the effect as similar as the semantic and syntactic structures of second language permits,accurate contextual meaning of the original.However,Communicative translation aims to generate the effect on its readers as similar as possible to that achieved on the readers from original countries.This theory works as the theoretical basis of the study in this thesis.The culture items existed in the English translation of The Classic of Tea and The Sequel to The Classic of Tea accomplished by Professor Jiang Xin and Jiang Yi conduct as the research target.On the basis of the original catalogue style as well as the table of contents in modern tea works,the culture items presented in these two tea works are classified into tea names,tea color,tea water,tea craftsmanship and appliances and tea appreciating.The author sorts out about five hundred culture items appeared in the two tea classics and finally selects about ten accordingly every sort,and then analyzes them at length in this thesis.In the way of qualitative research,this thesis adopts literature summarization,comparative analysis,exemplification.The author analyzes the examples that have been choosen one by one.The conclusion can be drawn that the translator mainly adopts the strategy of semantic translation as a way of preserving images and information.In addition,they also follow the strategy of communicative translation to make target texts more acceptable and readable to target readers.It is advisable to combine the two translation strategies in the translation process.The two translation strategies combined are in a position to help the target readers appreciate the original culture while understanding the contents of the original classics,thus promoting the cultural exchange between the oriental and the west.Translators are supposed to augment the knowledge reserve,have confidence in the culture and cultural works of our nation,and believe the target readers' acceptance and comprehension ability,so as to perform the mission of culture messenger.
