A Study Of The French Version Of Xi Jinping's UN Speeches From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Chinese leaders' public speeches,a window through which the outside world observes China's domestic and foreign policies,help explain China's development strategies,and contribute new ideas and roadmaps for international political activities.Therefore,diplomatic speeches play an important role in interpreting China to the international community and in shaping the nation's image.The translation of state leaders' public speeches helps determine the effectiveness and quality of China's publicity work,and is of vital importance in encouraging Chinese culture to "go global" and in helping the world to better understand China.From the perspective of skopos theory,the author will analyze the French version of the speeches delivered by President Xi at the United Nations and its agencies.In skopos theory,there are three rules proposed.The skopos rule is the top-ranking rule for any translation,and this rule states that translation strategies are determined by the skopos of the translation action.The coherence rule stipulates that the target text should be coherent and comprehensible for intended users.The fidelity rule refers to intertextual coherence between the source text and the target text.The thesis will,based on the three rules and the relationship among the rules,cover a broad range of examples to pinpoint specific translation strategies.The author,intending to apply skopos theory to Chinese diplomatic speeches' French translation,hopes this thesis will provide a frame of reference for the translation of Chinese diplomatic speeches into French,and inspire further studies applying skopos theory to the translation of state leaders' diplomatic speeches.
