A Skopostheoretical Study Of CE Translation Strategies Of Diplomatic Speeches

In recent years, with the further development of economic globalization and politicalmulti-polarization, China has been associating with the rest of the world frequently in the fieldof foreign affairs. People are paying more and more attentions with the sound and movement inthe diplomatic field for the world’s largest developing countries with1.4billion people.Diplomatic speeches play a major role in establishing good national reputation, elaboratingdomestic and foreign policies and strengthening foreign cultural exchanges. Therefore, thetranslation of Chinese diplomatic speeches has got more and more attention from all walks oflife as an integral part. The theme of this study is on English translation strategy of Chinesediplomatic speeches.As for the choices of translated texts, in order to make the research scientific and rigorous,this thesis selected two "joint development" keynote speeches by Xi Jinping in2013. The firstone is" Keynote Speech at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference2013titled as‘Working Together Toward a Better Future for Asia and the World’,” and the second one is"Speech at the Senate of Mexico titled as ‘Seek Common Development to Create a BetterFuture’.” Then, based on the core of the functionalist translation theory, Skopostheories, thisthesis will study the topic that translators adopt what kind of translation strategy can achievethe communicative skopos of the translated text in the process of translation. To this end, in thefirst place, the communicative skopos of the translated speeches have been identified withreference to the communicative purposes of the original speeches, the property of diplomaticspeeches, as well as the Skopostheories. Secondly, some concrete examples have been used (inlexical level, syntactical level as well as discourse level) to analyze what translation strategiescan be used in the translation process in order to achieve the communicative skopos of thetranslated speeches. Finally, according to the three rules of Skopostheories, the author judgeswhat translation strategy is more effective to achieve the communicative skopos of thetranslated speeches.The communicative skopos of translated speeches by Xi Jinping are as follows: Theskopos one is in order to promote the common development in Asian and Latin America, toelaborate China’s recommendations in Boao Forum for Asia and Mexican senate; the skopostwo is to expound China’s own domestic and foreign policy on common development, and letthe members of Boao Forum for Asia and countries in Latin America know more about China.The thesis draws the conclusion that in order to achieve the communicative skopos of thetranslation speeches, the main translation strategy is domestication, while foreignization should be taken as complementary translation strategy in terms of vocabulary, syntax and discourse.Moreover, the core idea of Skopostheories, translation is skopos, and the skopos is everythingis fully confirmed in this study. The application for research of foreign speech translation underthe light of Skopostheories is relatively insufficient. This thesis has a certain reference valueand practical significance for diplomatic speech translation practice and the applications ofSkopostheories in the field of foreign speech translation.
