Guide to Capsized Vessel Rescue and Guide to Emergency Towing,documents regulating rescue process of capsized vessel and emergency towing in detailwere originally drafted by Ministry of Transport of P.R.C.The target English texts were submitted to International Maritime Organization for acceptance as its official documents providing guidance in international salvage practice in future.The practice report focuses on the Chinese-English translation of maritime vocabularies in Guide to Capsized Vessel Rescue and Guide to Emergency Towing.Maritime vocabularies were divided into two categories in this report:technical terminology and maritime-related vocabulary.Since the original texts work as maritime rescue guides,the first category terminology were subdivided into maritime terms and maritime rescue terms,which were translated with reference to Nautical Terms and Symbols in Common Use published by Standardization Administration of P.R.C,Comprehensive Book of Maritime Practical English written by Si Yuzhuo and International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual(IAMSAR Manual)translated by Maritime Safety Administrationof P.R.C.As for the second category maritime-related vocabulary,this kind of vocabulary is translated with the method of context analysis.Broad and narrow sense,stylistics and application of words are taken full consideration in diction according to specific context.This report represents an important endeavor in the Chinese-English translation of maritime texts,and provides guidance for the translation of related text or study in fields of science and technology in future.
